Glossary
Write the definition of new words. Just provide the meaning that fits the context. Copy the sentence in which the word appears in the story.

"He refused to smoke for fear of harming his palate" Harming: to do or cause harm to; injure; damage; hurt: to harm one's reputation.

"rather droll habit of referring to it as though it were a living being". Droll: amusing in an odd way; whimsically humorous; waggish.

"Turn it round and let's have a peek" Peek: a quick or furtive look or glance; peep.

"I am trying to establish the growth" -- The  growth of something such as an industry, organization, or idea is its development in size, wealth, or importance.

"The radiance, the power, is lacking." -- If something or someone is lacking in a particular quality, they do not have any of it or enough of it.

“He sipped the wine” -- If you sip a drink or sip at it, you drink by taking just a small amount at a time.

“I could see that he was prepared to be thoroughly” -- A thorough action or activity is one that is done very carefully and in a detailed way so that nothing is forgotten.

“The maid was an elderly woman” -- You use elderly as a polite way of saying that someone is old.

“...I became aware of Mike and...” -- If you are aware of something, you know about it.

"He organized where sumptuous ..." -- Sumptuous: luxurious and showing that you are rich

"...challenging him to name its breed and its vintage" -- Breed: a particular type of animal or plant or a type of person

"He continued rising his voice...” -- Rising: to cause something to increase or become bigger, better, higher, etc

"Mike Schofield was an amiable ...” -- Amiable: describes a person or their behavior that is pleasant and friendly

"But he was a stockbroker ...” -- Stockbroker: a person or company that buys and sells stocks and shares for other people

"He dropped his mouthful of whitebait.. .” -- Whitebait: small, young fish of various different types, fried and eaten whole

"Seeming in her eagerness ..." -- Eagerness: wanting very much to do or have something, especially something interesting or enjoyable

"So she hesitated ..." -- Hesitated: to pause before you do or say something, often because you are uncertain or nervous about it

"You go and fetch it..." -- Fetch: to go to another place to get something or someone and bring them back

"…A claret ?"-- Claret: red wine made in the region near Bordeaux in France

"Whiteness around his nostrils now...” -- Nostrils: either of the two openings in the nose through which air moves when you breathe

"Just a trace of tannin. .." -- Tannin: a group of chemicals which are found in plant cells, especially in leaves, bark (= a tree's outer covering ) , and fruit which
is not ripe

"She jerked her head briskly..." -- Jerked: to make a short sudden movement, or to cause someone or something to do this

"And the quick astringent squeezes …" -- Astringent: describes a substance that acts as an astringent. S queeze: when you press something firmly

"Her old grey face had a frosty …" -- Frosty: very cold, with a thin layer of white ice covering everything

"In my study, with the cork out" -- Cork: a short cylindrical piece of cork, or sometimes plastic or rubber, which is put into the top of a bottle, especially a wine bottle, to close it


"Pratt glanced around, saw the pair of thin horn-rimmed spectacles that she held to him, and for a moment he hesitated." -- Horn-rimmed: describes glasses withframes that are colored with a mixture of dark and light brown; Glanced: to give a quick short look

"A small slow spark of shrewdness , hiding."-- Sparks: an ignited or fiery particle such as is thrown off by burning; Shrewdness: astute or sharp in practical matters:a shrewd politician

"But it his eyes, suddenly, there glimmered a little triumph" -- Glimmered: a faint or unsteady light; gleam.

"He picked up his glass and took another small sip ." Sip: to drink (a liquid) a little at a time

Vineyards : a plantation of grapevines, esp. one producing grapes for winemaking.

"spongy rubber" -- Spongy: of the nature of or resembling a sponge; light, porous, andelastic or readily compressible, as pith or bread.

"Waiting for him to turn the bottle around in it's basket and show the label" - Label: a slip of paper, cloth , or other material, marked or inscribed,for attachment to something to indicate its manufacturer, nature, ownership, destination, etc.

"Beginning to spread around the area of the nostrils ." -- Nostrils: either of the two external openings of the nose.

"He was president of a small society known as the Epicures" -- Epicures: a person who enjoys food and drink of a high quality; a gourmet.

"His round, cheerful face seemed to loosen slightly , but he controlled himself and said nothing" -- Cheerful: Someone who is slightly built is thin and delicate;
Slightly: describes a place or thing that is bright and pleasant and makes you feel positive and happy
